Experience the Midnight Sun in Saltdal

One of the simplest and most budget-friendly things to do in June and early July is to head outside in the middle of the night and experience the midnight sun. On clear summer nights, it’s a special moment for both kids and adults alike. There’s really nothing quite like a summer night in Northern Norway.

Midnight Sun in Saltdal

There are few natural experiences that can compare to a bright summer night in Northern Norway. In Saltdal, you can see the midnight sun reflecting in the fjord, lighting up the mountains and creating a golden landscape well into the early hours. When midnight passes and the sun is still above the horizon, it’s easy to understand why this is an experience people travel from all over the world to see.

The warm light gives the fjord a golden glow, the mountains cast long shadows, and the landscape can feel almost unreal in its beauty.

When can you experience the midnight sun?

Saltdal lies north of the Arctic Circle, and the midnight sun can be experienced from early June to early July. During this period, the sun does not set, and day and night blend into one continuous stretch of light.

Even outside the official midnight sun period, summer nights are very bright. From May through much of July, there is daylight for most of the day and night, giving plenty of time to explore the outdoors.

The best places to experience the midnight sun

Saltdal offers many great viewpoints, both along the fjord and up in the mountains.

Some popular spots include:

  • Rognan and the waterfront promenade along Saltdalsfjorden
  • Skansenøyra
  • Viewpoints along the E6
  • Mountain areas with panoramic views over fjord and landscape
