Mølndammen – a Historic Hiking Destination in Saltdal
Did you know that a quiet mountain pond on Kvælefjellet holds a history stretching back over 100 years—marked by hydropower, water supply, and a vital role in Norwegian healthcare history?
A Story of Hydropower
Mølndammen, also known as the Vensmo Dam, was built in 1915 to supply electricity and water to the newly established Vensmoen Sanatorium. Today, the area is both a national cultural heritage site and a popular hiking destination for locals and visitors alike.
From Sanatorium to Recreation
When Vensmoen Sanatorium was built to treat tuberculosis patients from across Northern Norway, access to electricity and clean water was essential. The solution was to dam two small mountain ponds on Kvælefjellet, 330 meters above the sanatorium. From there, a 2-kilometer pressure pipe led down to a power station in the basement of the “Machinist’s Residence.” The facility generated 28 kW—enough to power lights and machinery.
After the power plant was decommissioned in 1959, the dam continued to serve as a vital water source for the area. Just as importantly, Mølndammen became a beloved spot for day trips among patients and locals. With scenic surroundings and thriving trout, many residents of Saltdal had their first taste of fishing and outdoor life right here.
The End of an Era – and a New Beginning
Over time, the old dry stone dam developed structural issues. After many years of assessments and discussions, the Municipality of Saltdal, in collaboration with NVE and technical advisors, decided to dismantle the aging structure. The work was completed in 2024–2025, and the two original ponds have now been reestablished.
Although the large reflective surface of Mølndammen is smaller today, the area continues to thrive as both a cultural site and a recreational destination. Fishing is still possible, and efforts are being made to preserve—and even improve—the quality of the fish population over time.
